CLARITAS Retail Market Power

Discover sales opportunity gaps by analyzing supply and demand in any market

Overview

Uncovering areas of sales opportunity within a market is difficult for retailers in today's fast-paced business environment. Nielsen Claritas Retail Market Power (RMP) database provides an actionable portrait of sales opportunity for optimal site and market analysis, so you can maximize your growth strategies by accurately targeting the sales gaps that exist in the marketplace.

Features & Benefits

By using demand potential and retail sales estimates to depict supply and demand within a specific market, RMP research enables an opportunity gap analysis of the retail environment. With RMP sales estimates, you can leverage your market share analysis and plan accordingly to capitalize on unmet product demand in current or new markets.

Access the power of RMP to:

  • Analyze sales patterns for different locations and refine your site and market analyses
  • Determine new areas of opportunity for retail sales and optimize sales forecasting and market planning
  • Compare the supply-side and demand-side of retail sales estimates for a complete analysis of your markets

Opportunity gap analysis

One of the most important features of RMP is that it presents a measure of consumer demand/ expenditures, allowing the user to calculate any gaps or surpluses in the marketplace. This sales estimate feature addresses limitations of other data products by presenting a consumer demand and supply measure and by expanding the number of retail store types and merchandise line items available for analysis.

Comprehensive variable list

RMP presents 84 store type variables and 35 merchandise line items. Retail sales forecast, product demand and consumer demand estimates are available for both sets.

RMP reports

  • Opportunity gap analysis reports show supply and demand dollar estimates and the sales opportunity gaps by retail category for a specific market.
  • Product Demand Growth Estimate reports show consumer expenditures by category for current and five-year estimates with its associated percentage change for a specific market.

Technology Specifications

Retail Market Power is based on the Census of Retail Trade (CRT), in addition to monthly and annual surveys of retail trade data from the Bureau of the Census and Claritas’ current-year demographic estimates. Sales data is calculated by using business sales estimates, business locations, and employee counts. Sales at the national level by NAICS code are validated against the 2002 Economic Census (NAICS Majors only) and County Business Patterns data provided by the Census Bureau. The annual update of the supply side county level data is derived from ES202 data, Retail Sales Tax data, and Business-Facts.
